Operation Transformation
Monday 9th January
The New Year resolutions have kicked off and some Residents & Staff of Deerpark House are taking part in this year's Operation Transformation. Registration will be held in the Westlodge Hotel on Monday the 9th of January.
Cork Simon Community
Coffee Morning
On Friday the 30th of December, Residents & Staff of Deerpark House held a coffee morning in aide of the Cork Simon Community. A total of €120 was raised and a great morning was had by all who attended. Thanks to all for supporting such a great cause.

Throughout the day Residents of Deerpark House will be personalising their very own Christmas Tree decorations.
Our cooks will be baking festive shaped biscuits over the coming days which will be decorated in all types of colours and styles!

There will be an exclusive appearance at Deerpark House Nursing Home. Nell the Donkey will be paying a visit to our Residents at 2 pm. Nell is a 3 ft miniature donkey. She is a training pet therapy animal and we are sure she will put a smile on a lot of faces.
On Tuesday the 22nd of December we had an exclusive visit from Nell The Donkey. She went down a storm with all our residents and staff. She will be visiting us again soon to play her role in our Nativity Play.

Christmas Pudding Mix

Now that Halloween is over, Christmas preparations are well underway.
This week Residents will be mixing up the Annual Christmas Pudding, which always goes down a treat.

Halloween 2016
31 October @ 6pm
On Halloween Night, we will be hosting a fancy dress party for residents, staff and friends of Deerpark House. So come along in your best costume and maybe ‘bob an apple’ or listen to a scary tale. There will be various prizes and competitions on the night. Light refreshments available. All welcome to attend!
Preparations for our Halloween Party are coming together nicely. Residents have already created decorations and they will be baking delicious biscuits next week.

Halloween has just passed and what a fantastic evening of song and dance we had here at Deerpark House.
Residents took part in selecting the most creative Pumpkin Carvings which were created by some of the staff. The winner of the competition was our very own Margaret Lehane, who's goolish pumpkin left us all a bit scared.
West Cork Feel Good Festival
Saturday 15th October
In conjunction with World Mental Health Week, on Saturday the 15th of October, staff & residents of Deerpark House will be attending Colaisté Phobaill, Bantry, to participate in the annual West Cork Feel Good Festival. There will be a parade leaving from the school at 1 pm which will include floats, brass bands and it will have lots of colourful displays and of course colourful people. The main aim of this festival is to spread happiness to all throughout the world. Deerpark House will be providing a hearty home cooked stew to serve afterwards to all in attendance.
Fundraising Event Update
Deerpark House Nursing Home, Bantry, held a very successful coffee & cake morning on Wednesday the 28th of September in aid of two great causes, Help Oliwia fight with Cancer Fund & Rural Transport Services. Residents, staff, friends and family of Deerpark House raised a total of €553.70 on the day.
€415 was presented to the Help Oliwia fight with Cancer Fund and €150.00 was presentedto the Rural Transport Service.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed in making this such a great success!
Music Night
10th of October at 6pm
On the 10th of October at 6pm, We will be hosting a Music Night where John Coakley & Friends will play a few golden & oldies to entertain all residents. Light refreshments will be on offer.

Fundraising Coffee Morning

Olivia Stanczak and West Cork Rural Transport
On Wednesday the 28th of September Deerpark House will host a coffee morning from 1100hrs to 1230hrs in aid of two great causes. Olivia Stanczak and West Cork Rural Transport.
Oliwia Stanczak is 10 years old. She was diagnosed with cancer of the hip bone in October 2015 and has been undergoing treatment in Warsaw, Poland .
Oliwia has already undergone 6 cycles of preoperative chemotherapy and in April 2016 she had surgery to remove the tumour and had a prosthesis inserted. This August 2016 she completed 25 cycles of radiotherapy but she continues to need intensive rehabilitation therapy. It is hoped that this will allow her to return to good health and her family & friends in Bantry.
The Rural Transport has been running since 2002 is the West Cork area. They provide safe accessible rural community transport in West Cork prioritising Older People, Youth and People with Disabilities. This is an exceptional service that has helped so many people throughout the years.
All proceeds will go towards both causes.
“Heroes of 1916”
Friday the 16th of September
from 11 am to 1 pm
Tom Weld will be holding an 8 week workshop here at Deerpark House Nursing Home. The theme of the project will be “Heroes of 1916” . Some of our residents will be participating in the workshop over the next few weeks. This should be a very interesting topic in such an important year in Irish history. The first session will commence on Friday the 16th of September from 11 am to 1 pm.

August 2016
Raised Garden
We have recently got together and built two fantastic raised flower beds in the main courtyard. Over the past few weeks Residents have planted some new shrubs which look beautiful. They add great character and omit fragrant scents like lavender to the area. They are tended and watered daily and we look forward to planting some more in the future.
Sunflower Project
The sunflower seeds planted and looked after by residents of Deerpark House back in May have really come along. They have grown far faster that we anticipated and they still have a bit to go. With the end of the summer nearing we hope that they will continue to reach new heights.
Bantry House & Gardens
26th August
On the 26th of August there will be an outing to Bantry House & Gardens to view an exhibition of famous Ballylickey botanist, Ellen Hutchins.
Her work will be displayed in the stable block of Bantry House. Ellen work dates back over 100 years.
Music Night
8th August
On Monday the 8th of August, musician John Coakley and friends visited Deerpark House to entertain our residents with singing & dancing. A great night was had by all.

Outing The Sculpture Garden
29th July
Residents of Deerpark House visited The sculpture garden (Rossa memorial park) which is located in Skibbereen. The outing was in conjunction with the Skibbereen Arts Festival. The sun was shining and a great day was had by all.
Bake!
July 7th at 11am
On Thursday the 7th of July at 11 am our Activities Assistant Jennifer, will be demonstrating how to bake delicious treats with the residents of Deerpark House. Some of the treats on the list are the scrumptious Eton Mess.
Flowers By Sheila
July 6th at 11am
On Wednesday the 6th of July at 11 am our Activities Assistant Sheila, who has a extreme talent and passion for flower arranging will demonstrate to our residents how to create there own special bouquet. Sheila & friends will be gathering flowers and foliage from the lane-ways & boreens surrounding Bantry. At the end of the demonstration there will be a competition for the most beautiful bouquet created. Family & friends welcome to attend.
Walking Project
Month of July
For the month of July we will be running our Summer Walking Project for all residents who wish to take part. Maybe a trip to At the end of the month, the resident with the most steps counted will win a special prize.

Movement to Music
May 12th
On Thursday the 12th of May Deerpark House hosted a free community event in Bantry Library as part of the Bealtaine Festival which celebrates creativity of the Older generation. We spent one hour going over various different exercises incorporating music and laughter along the way. Afterwards a well deserved tea/coffee was enjoyed with a cream cake.
Alzheimer's Society
Thursday the 5th of May from 1100 – 1300 hrs
A morning of fun and music was held at Deerpark House Nursing Home on Thursday the 5th of May, which was in conjunction with the national Alzheimer's Tea Day. The wonderful John Coakley & his partner Kate kept the atmosphere alive with traditional Irish music. All funds raised on the morning went to The Alzheimer's Society of Ireland which is a non for profit organisation. They provide a wide range of services for people living with Alzheimer's, and also provide support for families & carers who look after those living with this disease.
Deerpark House was assisted in this effort by several local businesses who kindly put a donation box in their place of work on the day Many thanks to the following businesses of Bantry:

Spring Project
Beginning End April
Spring planting project will begin towards the end of April, kindly co ordinated by Arthur Russell. We will be starting by planting our annual sunflower seeds. So lets watch these grow to new heights over the coming months.
Easter Art Project
For our Easter Art Project we created a display of a chicken coop with hens & baby chicks, lots of eggs and a cheeky fox on the prowl
1916 Centenary - 14th April
A visit from transition year students from Colaiste Phobaill, Beanntrai on Thursday the 14th of April where they will perform some songs on the piano with a slide show to follow, all themed around the 1916 centenary commemorations.

Irish Proclamation day March 15th
We celebrated Irish Proclamation day on the March 15th, along with our residents & Co Action group. We read our Irish Proclamation, followed by some poetry, song & tasty refreshments.

Operation transformation Bantry -
Mondays 6:30 January/February
Deerpark House staff will be doing a weekly walking group every Monday evening at 6.30pm outside the Bantry Bay hotel. We will meet every Monday up to and including February 22nd 2016. This is a free walking group, remember to wear suitable walking shoes and be prepared for rain. Ask activities staff for more information.

November - Winter is Here
Fundraiser 20th November
The residents of Deerpark House will host an intergenerational morning with Gael Scoil, Bheanntraí, second class students. Where their aim will be to complete a 500 ball throw with the aid of a parachute. Using the skill and experience of the residents and the energy and dexterity of the students.
They are asking for support to enable them to raise much needed funds for the Cork Simon Community as we head into the cold winter months. They are doing this fundraiser in conjunction with the local Lions Club.
Music Night 9th of November
Music night with Dermot, Larry & Friends. Do come and join us for an evening of music, song & story. Refreshments will be served.
Men's Group
Tom Weld’s men’s group is coming to a close. There have been some very interesting conversations had, reminiscing, sharing & much fun. We are awaiting the fruits of these meetings which were centred around mapping of where life takes us. The poem ‘The road less travelled’ springs to mind.
Tom will host a morning where he will show the fruits of the men’s groups labour over the past 8 weeks. We are all looking forward to this!
Children’s Shoe Box Appeal
We are all familiar with the shoebox appeal where shoe-boxes are sent to under privileged children for Christmas. The residents have been very busy covering & filling boxes for both boys and girls. They have been very imaginative in their suggestions as to what goes in the box. Knitting hats, scarves, bags. Little stocking fillers for the boys. They will be ready to go on their long journey on the 2nd of November. They have given much pleasure to our residents in the hope that they will bring some joys in these children’s lives.
Saturday the the 31st October @ 6pm Main lounge
We will be seeing October out with our Halloween children’s parade on Saturday the the 31st October @ 6pm in the main lounge. The results of the pumpkin carving competition will be announced. There is great interest amongst the staff of Deerpark House this year showing great artistic skills.
Wednesday 28th October
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Christina’s great grand children who entertained us all the way from the UK, in the lounge with their wonderful Irish dancing talents. She was a very proud granny. They brought much pleasure to all of our residents. A good morning was had by all.
Celebrating Deerpark House
On the 14th September 2015 Deerpark House celebrated 16 successful years caring for the elderly in our community. They marked the occasion with a gathering of Resident’s, family, staff and friends. Fr. Con Cronin gave a blessing to all present and spoke on the wonderful love, care and friendship he has witnessed throughout his years of calling to Deerpark House, where he has always been made to feel very welcome and at home. Trish paid tribute to her management and staff for making Deerpark House what it is today, a safe and friendly environment, “the home with a lifestyle”. She thanked everyone for coming to share in the celebrations, especially our in house musicians - Larry, Dermot and friends. Trish also thanked all who have given their time and talents over the years to the many events Deerpark House has hosted and looks forward to the continued close connection between the community and the Residents here at Deerpark House.
Music played, refreshments enjoyed and a wonderful evening of song and story was had by all.
Poetry Mornings
Main Lounge
Poems with a summer theme are being recited and sought to uplift our spirits and stir our imagination with memories of summers past. Likewise, songs of lazy, hazy, summer days, not to mention the Rose of Tralee, are to the fore. Sing-along and poetry morning are facilitated by Valerie/Sheila in the main lounge.
A focus on summer flowers to cheer us all up. Flower arranging will be on-going for the month of August.

Knitting Project
Update August
Fingerless gloves for the looming winter are coming along nicely. They are the colours of the rainbow and are being made to fit all ages and will make lovely Christmas presents. The project is turning into a right stich and *itch event.
Trip to the Seaside

Trip to the local beach promenade, where we will enjoy, tea, coffee & scones, and the sun will shine (we are ever optimistic). Transport provided by the local link.

Ursula and her friend Joy will entertain us with a trip down memory lane with scenes of west cork in the 1980/1990. How things have changed from fashion, cars, farming and so on, but one thing remains the same and that's the wonderful unspoilt beauty that sets west cork apart and makes it a special place to be enjoyed by all . So date for the diary hope to see you there for a morning of chat over a cuppa.
Art Group Update July
The art group are very busy with the wonderful lanterns they have created and are on view in the dining room at present. Where we failed to get out to the summer bloom (due to weather), the group has done a wonderful job in bringing the garden indoors, with their flower arranging skills.
Who knows what wonderful creation they have in store for us next week. Well done Jennifer.
Sing-a-long Update July
Valerie and Ciara are doing a great job on the singing/whistle/box/piano department. They are getting everybody singing, lifting our spirits on the not so summery, soft/damp/dull mornings we have being experiencing here in West Cork. So well done girls and keep up the good work.
Knitting Project Update July
Our knitting project is going very well at the moment where we are knitting fingerless gloves for the residents, with a view perhaps giving as Christmas gifts to family and friends. Many shapes, colours & styles are being produced and they are keeping everybody busy. Great interest is being shown by both staff and visitors.
July Beach Trip
Summer day trip to the seaside, weather permitting, will take place this month. residents will visit the Bantry beach, where they will enjoy sea air, picnic and hopefully the weather will oblige such a trip. We are keeping a close eye on the weather forecast.
6th July Special Guest
On our monthly music night with Larry, Dermot & friends we had a surprise guest, none other than Mr Sean O Shea himself. A wonderful night of music & song was enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Sean for being so generous with his time and talents.
Pet Therapy

We are very glad to announce the addition of a new member to our family here at Deerpark House, ‘Coco’, a very gentle, calm and well behaved Springer Spaniel, who will visit along with his buddy Frank on Saturday mornings to spend time with our residents. I'm sure we will all have a WOOF of a time.

Holy Communion Class
Friday 5th June 11am
We will have a visit from the first holy communion class of The Convent of Mercy, Bantry. They will be in full splendour & beautifully turned out in their communion dresses for us all to enjoy.
Refreshments will be served and we are all looking forward to the visit as it always proves to be a very memorable and joyful morning.
Monday 18th May
Our Indian nurses brought a taste of India to our residents through their national dress & food. We had a wonderful morning of colour & spice.

Alzheimer's Tea Day
7th of May
Deerpark House hosted a pop up tea/coffee/cupcake dock in Bantry, where people enjoyed home baking, cuppa & chat for a donation to the Alzheimer Society Ireland.
€350 was raised.
A big thanks to all who helped and donated.
Pop Up Stall
7th May
Residents & Staff will be setting up a pop up stall in Bantry town serving teas & coffee's along with scrumptious cupcakes baked in house on Thursday the 7th of May (weather permitting).
All proceeds will go towards Alzheimers Ireland.
We will have a Music Night in the main residents lounge.
